Let’s fill the North Bend City Council chambers tomorrow night
Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m., the North Bend City Council is
set to vote on a five-year body camera contract with Axon. We need the community to show up and speak their mind.
We are not against body cameras. We are for transparency, accountability, and community
oversight. We are against a cloud-based storage system that the federal government and ICE specifically searches. A five-year contract locks us in before the community has seen the policy, the
data-sharing agreements, or the training. That is the wrong order.

Come and tell the council: show us the policy, put the safeguards in writing, and give
the community a real voice through a CCOPS oversight model. You do not need to be an
expert. Your lived experience is your expertise.

Why we are against the Axon contract
|
•
|
It hands your footage to a private company. Axon wants to be the
“operating system” for police data, pooling footage from thousands of departments
on its own servers. The ACLU warns that gives a for-profit company unfettered
access to Americans’ sensitive data, and company insiders could use it to target
critics, journalists, or even alter evidence.
|
|
•
|
The data goes to the cloud, where federal agencies can reach it.
Axon is cashing in on federal contracts, including body cameras for ICE and DHS.
Privacy experts warn the footage will be used to surveil immigrants and protesters,
not just hold officers accountable.
|
|
•
|
It is a gateway to facial recognition. Axon is already testing
face recognition on body cameras. Its own ethics board said the technology is not
reliable enough and should not be used until it works equally across races. A
five-year contract locks us in as that rolls out.
|
|
•
|
It is a big, locked-in cost. This contract is over $275,000 for five
years. A five-year deal makes it hard to switch vendors, and the city is on the
hook for the whole term.
|
|
•
|
It buries the evidence. Departments report a 600% jump in video
evidence in five years; even minor cases can generate a terabyte. Agencies struggle
to pay for the storage, and the systems do not talk to each other.
