The North Bend City Council votes tonight at 7:00 p.m. on the five-year Axon body camera contract. If you want your voice heard, you have two ways in, and one of them closes in about two hours.

We are not against body cameras. We are for transparency, accountability, and community oversight. We are against a cloud-based storage system that the federal government and ICE specifically searches, and a five-year contract that locks us in before the community has seen the policy, the data-sharing agreements, or the training. That is the wrong order.

North Bend City Council votes on Axon body cameras

City Council Chambers, North Bend City Hall
835 California Ave, North Bend

Come and tell the council: show us the policy, put the safeguards in writing, and give the community a real voice through a CCOPS oversight model. You do not need to be an expert. Your lived experience is your expertise.

Can’t make it? You can still be heard

Submit a comment online. Get it in before 1:00 p.m. today, Oct 27th. The long comment box is below the short “about your comment” box, so scroll down.

And if you do not live in North Bend but you drive through it, you interact with their police and you are affected by their policies. They may not listen to you as much as a resident, but they should still hear the concerns of the community.

Why we are against the Axon contract

We have been researching this for months, and the evidence is damning. Axon’s own platform is used by federal agencies. Its cameras are always capturing, even when the officer has not pressed record. Its facial recognition is being tested on body cameras despite its own ethics board saying the technology is not reliable enough. A U.S. Senator is investigating its data practices.

This is the moment to be heard. Benjamin Franklin put it best: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” (Pennsylvania Assembly, November 11, 1755)

Do not trade your privacy for a promise of safety. Submit your comment by 1 p.m., or come tonight and say it to their faces. When the people show up, the people win.
